Cookie Policy
The short version — plain English
- We use cookies to keep the site working and to understand how visitors use it.
- Essential cookies are always on — the site cannot function without them.
- Analytics cookies (Google Analytics) are on by default but you can opt out.
- Advertising cookies are only set if we display ads through a third-party network.
- We do not use cookies to identify you personally or track you across other sites ourselves.
- You can control or delete cookies at any time through your browser settings.
- EU and UK visitors will see a consent banner for non-essential cookies.
What are cookies?
Cookies are small text files that a website stores on your device — computer, phone, or tablet — when you visit. They are read by the website on your next visit and help the site remember information about you, such as your preferences or whether you have visited before.
Cookies are not programs and cannot run code, carry viruses, or access files on your device. They contain only text and are entirely harmless on their own. The data in a cookie can only be read by the website that created it.
There are two main types by lifespan: session cookies, which are deleted automatically when you close your browser, and persistent cookies, which remain on your device for a set period of time or until you delete them. There are also first-party cookies (set by this website) and third-party cookies (set by external services we use, like Google Analytics).
Cookies we use — overview
We use the minimum number of cookies necessary to operate this site and understand how it is used. Here is a complete breakdown by category:
Essential cookies
Required for core site functionality. Cannot be disabled.
These cookies are strictly necessary for the site to work. Without them, basic features like security, page navigation, and form submission would not function. They do not collect personal information used for marketing.
| Cookie name | Purpose | Duration | Type |
|---|---|---|---|
| __cf_bm | Cloudflare bot management — distinguishes human visitors from automated traffic | 30 minutes | First-party |
| cf_clearance | Cloudflare security challenge verification | 1 day | First-party |
| cookie_consent | Stores your cookie consent preferences so we don't ask again | 1 year | First-party |
Analytics cookies
Help us understand how visitors use the site. No personal data stored.
We use Google Analytics 4 to measure traffic and usage patterns — which pages are most visited, how long people spend on them, and how they navigate between sections. This data is aggregated and anonymized. We have enabled IP anonymization, which means your full IP address is never stored by Google.
| Cookie name | Purpose | Duration | Set by |
|---|---|---|---|
| _ga | Distinguishes unique visitors. Assigns a randomly generated ID — no personal information stored. | 2 years | Google Analytics |
| _ga_XXXXXXXX | Maintains session state for GA4 — tracks pageviews within a single session | 2 years | Google Analytics |
| _gid | Distinguishes users across sessions within a 24-hour window | 24 hours | Google Analytics |
| _gat | Rate-limits requests to Google Analytics servers — prevents data loss under high traffic | 1 minute | Google Analytics |

Advertising cookies
Set by ad networks if we display third-party advertisements.
If we display advertisements through Google AdSense or another ad network, that network may set cookies to show you ads relevant to your interests based on your browsing behavior across other websites. These are set by the ad network, not directly by us. We do not have access to or control over the data these cookies collect.
| Cookie name | Purpose | Duration | Set by |
|---|---|---|---|
| IDE | Google DoubleClick — used to show targeted ads and measure their effectiveness | 13 months | Google Ads |
| DSID | Identifies a signed-in Google user to serve consistent ads across devices | 2 weeks | Google Ads |
| test_cookie | Checks whether the user's browser supports cookies before serving ads | 15 minutes | Google Ads |

Third-party cookies we do not control
In addition to the cookies described above, some third-party services embedded in or linked from this site may set their own cookies. These are outside our direct control and governed by each service's own privacy and cookie policies:
Google Fonts — when your browser loads a font file from Google's servers, Google may log your IP address. See Google's Privacy Policy.
YouTube embeds — if any page embeds a YouTube video, YouTube may set cookies even before you play the video. We use YouTube's privacy-enhanced mode (youtube-nocookie.com) where possible to minimize this.
Social sharing buttons — if we include social media sharing buttons, those platforms may set tracking cookies when the buttons load. We use static share links rather than embedded buttons where possible to prevent this.
We do not use Facebook Pixel, TikTok Pixel, Hotjar, Intercom, or any other behavioral analytics or session recording tools.
Your choices and how to control cookies
You have several options for controlling cookies on this site and across the web. Essential cookies cannot be disabled without breaking site functionality, but all non-essential cookies can be controlled through the methods below.
Cookie preferences
Toggle non-essential cookie categories on or off. Your preferences are saved for one year.
Essential cookies
Required for the site to function. Security, session management, and consent memory.
Analytics cookies
Google Analytics — helps us understand which content is useful. Fully anonymized.
Advertising cookies
Third-party ad network cookies for personalized advertising. Only active if ads are displayed.
Note: This preference manager demonstrates your options. On the live site, your selections are stored via the cookie_consent cookie and applied to all non-essential tracking.
Blocking all cookies will prevent some parts of this site from working correctly. We recommend blocking third-party cookies only, which stops cross-site tracking while keeping the site fully functional.
Browser-level cookie controls
Every major browser gives you direct control over cookies. You can block all cookies, block third-party cookies only, delete existing cookies, or set exceptions for specific sites. Here are instructions for the most common browsers:
Direct opt-out links
For faster control, you can opt out of specific tracking and advertising systems directly using these official tools:
- Google Analytics: Install the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on to prevent your visits from being included in Analytics data across all websites that use it.
- Google personalized ads: Visit Google Ad Settings to control whether Google uses your activity to show you personalized ads.
- Digital Advertising Alliance (US): The DAA opt-out tool lets you opt out of interest-based advertising from participating companies in one step.
- Network Advertising Initiative (US): The NAI opt-out tool covers additional ad networks not included in the DAA tool.
- Your Online Choices (EU/UK): Visit youronlinechoices.eu to manage advertising preferences for participating companies under GDPR.
Do Not Track
Some browsers offer a "Do Not Track" (DNT) signal that you can enable to request that websites not track your behavior. Currently there is no agreed technical standard for how websites should respond to DNT signals, and most analytics and advertising services do not honor them.
We do not currently alter our data collection practices in response to DNT signals. If a universal standard is adopted, we will update this policy and our site's behavior accordingly. In the meantime, the browser controls and opt-out links above are the most reliable ways to limit tracking.
GDPR, UK GDPR and cookie consent
Under the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), UK GDPR, and the ePrivacy Directive (Cookie Law), websites must obtain informed consent from visitors in the EU and UK before setting non-essential cookies.
If you are visiting from the EU or UK, you will be shown a cookie consent banner on your first visit. You can accept all cookies, reject non-essential cookies, or customize your preferences by category. Your choice is stored in the cookie_consent cookie for one year so you are not asked again on every visit.
Essential cookies do not require consent as they are strictly necessary for the site to function. Analytics and advertising cookies require your explicit consent and will not be set until you provide it.
You can withdraw or change your consent at any time by clearing your cookies and revisiting the site, which will trigger the consent banner again, or by using the preference manager on this page.
The legal basis for essential cookies is legitimate interest. The legal basis for analytics and advertising cookies is consent under Article 6(1)(a) of the GDPR.
Changes to this policy
We may update this Cookie Policy from time to time — for example, if we add a new third-party service, remove an existing one, or if cookie names or durations change. When we do, we will update the "last updated" date at the top of this page.
If we make significant changes — such as introducing a new category of cookies or a new advertising relationship — we will notify visitors through a notice on the homepage or by re-displaying the consent banner.

Important: If you add new third-party services to this site — such as a live chat widget, heatmap tool, email marketing integration, or new ad network — you must update this cookie policy to list the new cookies before activating those services. GDPR regulators have fined sites specifically for having outdated cookie disclosures. Run a cookie audit (tools like CookieYes or Cookiebot can scan your site automatically) whenever you add a new service.
